Thanks to our work on asthma and arthritis shown by our discovery of SINGULAR¨ (montelukast sodium) and of VIOXX¨ (rofecoxib), we have become the world leaders in the understanding of the inflammatory process, and especially in the chemistry and biology of leukotriene and prostaglandins. Another important research sector at Merck Frosst is devoted to the study of phosphatase enzymes, a category of molecules that compose the fundamental regulation mechanisms of the human body. Merck Frosst scientists, in collaboration with researchers at McGill University have discovered a phosphatase of the insulin receptor that may constitute a better target for the treatment of diabetes and obesity.
